Acclimation is a condition, not a countdown
Wood should reach the moisture condition required for the product, installation method, and site—not simply sit in a room for a fixed number of days. The building should be enclosed and operating near normal living conditions, and the installer should evaluate the wood and substrate with appropriate moisture readings.
Connecting to an existing floor
When new hardwood meets existing strip flooring, lacing can create a continuous transition instead of a threshold. A convincing result depends on compatible dimensions, species, grade, direction, access, and enough existing flooring to create a staggered weave. Sanding and finishing the connected area together usually gives the most unified appearance.
Details that prevent a beautiful box from becoming a bad floor
- Subfloor flatness, soundness, cleanliness, and fastening
- Moisture testing and any required mitigation
- Approved underlayment or adhesive
- Expansion space and fixed-object clearances
- Board direction and layout around focal points
- Transitions, stair noses, vents, doors, appliances, and base shoe

- Confirm the exact manufacturer, collection, grade, dimensions, finish, and installation instructions
- Decide how natural variation and short boards will be distributed
- Approve transition profiles and height changes
- Set aside attic stock for future repairs
- Write down who owns floor protection after installation
